Originally from Portland Oregon, Gary Guthman started his musical career at the age of nine and studied classically for the first 15 of his playing years. After graduating Portland State University, he performed short stints in the 80s as the youngster with the Dorsey Brothers Big Band, Stan Kenton Orchestra, Don Ellis Orchestra and Louis Bellson. Gary, at a very young age (19), was lucky to be in the right place at the right time to tour with the Bee Gees. Thereafter, Gary Guthman moved to Canada (Edmonton, Toronto Vancouver) where he performed coast to coast across Canada on television, radio, and movie film scores as soloist and with his New Swing Orchestra. Gary performed on stage and in television with such notables as Tony Bennett, Jack Jones, Mel Torme, Johnny Mathis, and Dionne Warwick. As well, he appeared as a regular on two television series produced in Canada for Tom Jones and Paul Anka. From the early 1990s, Gary has produced, written and directed three stage shows and has performed for audiences throughout the world with his Tribute to Harry James, Trumpet Greats, and Salute to Swing in concert halls, jazz festivals and with Symphony Pops. In 2004, he presented and unprecedented 13 performances of his Big Band Swing production entitled Swingmatism at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, receiving rave reviews and standing ovations at every! From 1999 -2002, Gary was the star and Musical Director in the award winning Big Band Musical Theatre production of, Forever Swing which toured in the United States and Canada with over 300 performances, culminating at a month-long, sold-out run at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. In January of 2004, in his premier performance, Gary was invited to premier at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra conducted by the late Skitch Henderson. He received a standing ovation and rave critical reviews. Over the last three years, Gary Guthman has been bringing back the great sounds of the Big Bands by performing throughout Europe, recently completing his 3rd European concert tour. As Gary brings back the exciting sounds of the Swing era to audiences young and old, he has become affectionately known to Eastern European audiences as the new King of Swing.
