The Karate guys does know how to sprawl and stuff. I am not sure if they teach you sprawling in your Karate dojo. There are guys who know no/little ground game and survive in MMA like Cro Cop.

My instructor told us this: you learn martial arts because you like martial arts not just because just want to defend yorself. To be able to defend yourself in every possible situation would take far more effort than you are willing to spend. My instructor has been doing martial arts for 30 years...
