When I was 11 I was diagnosed with ALL. Yes, it was frightening, and yes, I believe that how I coped with that situation has had an impact on my character and personality traits today.
But I learned a lot from the other kids in the oncology unit at the hospital. There were kids as young as 5 who I became friends with, kids who calmly kept me together when I was crying, kids who taught me, kids who forever inspired me.
The pediatric oncology unit is like a secret club, which outsiders don't and maybe shouldn't know about. It is a place where facets of the human condition become revealed, which are revealed in few other places (perhaps among those in the World Trade Center, above the fire, who chose to jump, or those on Flight 93 who KNEW that they had minutes left to live). And the way that such young people are forced to deal with those issues amongst themselves is something an outsider probably can never fully understand.
I cherish that experience.

As one who has survived cancer (ALL) and chemotherapy, when you are given that diagnosis, you don't stop living. If I died from cancer, well, I would eventually have died if I DIDN'T have cancer, too. It just (1) changes your life in the short term, and (2) helps you appreciate living every day. "Japan" should do this for all of us. We ALL die one day. We are better off (in my opinion) not DWELLING on that fact every moment of every day, but events like the Japan catastrophe give pause to many of us and make us reflect on the inevitable. "KNOWING" that we will die gives some of us more focused and positive living experiences, and for many that includes "Religion."

Yea-rah!
Our Generation has had no Great war, no Great Depression. Our war is spiritual. Our depression is our lives.
We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.
If I can't be beautiful, I want to be invisible.
