These amazingly colorful scenes were filmed in Santa Clarita, California, in February of 2012. High, humid winds aloft were formed into waves as the air below moved over local mountain ranges, essentially making ripples in the air currents - much like water ripples over obstacles in a stream. As the air above was forced up a little higher, the moisture condensed into clouds. Upon returning to the lower altitude on the downward (downwind) side of the ripple, the moisture evaporated and the cloud disappeared, allowing the normally invisible peaks of the ripples to be seen.
The little black speckles which can be seen in a few of the shots are a huge colony of White-Throated Swifts circling the area in front of the camera as they catch dusk-flying insects. Swifts are interesting birds, spending most of their lives in the air and seldom landing, they are most closely related to Hummingbirds :-)

Here are a few interesting views of this astonomical event in high definition timelapse, including composited star trails using techniques developed by JCM Digital Imaging. Filmed with a Canon 5D Mk2 and 17mm-40mm wide angle f/4.0L lens from Santa Clarita, CA. Images were taken every 8 seconds using a 7-second exposure at f4 and ISO4000 to capture all the stars visible in this somewhat light-polluted area.
The soundtrack is "The End of Summer (CD Ver*)" from the "TimeShift" CD by Technician (yours truly), album and single track available on iTunes: http://itunes.app... full artist discography and CDs available at HTTP://technician.jcmdi.com
