Atelier's Window
I began working as a house painter, after graduating from high school.
My master, who was 60 years old, singing naniwa-bushi, painted fast and well, although he moved leisurely.
I was fascinated and carried away by the way he uses a brush without needless movement.
Afterwards, my object of fascination changed to the way of using brushes and spatulas by Urushi artists, and I entered into a life of an apprentice in Kiso (Nagano Pref.).
One day, I asked my master the reason why he didn't check the bowls I painted.
He said instantly "There is no need for it, if I only see you working from behind".
After I was independent, I became able to concentrate without realizing the eyes of other people, while, at the same time, tension was lost.
YouTube would give me a comfortable tension, just as when I am seen through an atelier window.
Both to see and to be seen bring up an artisan.
