林書豪父親林繼明強調，林家是台灣人。林繼明知道他的長兄林繼宗要接受紐約時報訪問，要他務必跟記者把這點講清楚。
報導引述林繼宗的話說，林書豪父母親都生於台灣，林家祖先在1707年從福建移民到台灣，到林繼宗兄弟是第八代。
報導說，浙江省有位官員日前表示，林書豪祖籍是浙江，因為他的外祖母在那裡長大，1949年才遷居到台灣南部。
林書豪的外祖母是虔誠的基督徒，曾一度嫁給牧師，生下林書豪的母親吳信信並撫養她長大之後移居美國。
林繼宗說，林書豪的外祖母仍懷念中國大陸，並在家鄉的高中設立獎學金，但根據大陸和台灣的文化傳統，林書豪的身份要看父親這邊來決定。
他說：「我們是個父系社會，因此，我知道（林書豪）媽媽那邊在大陸有親人，但是要看爸爸這邊，也就是台灣人。」
