While there may not be much to actually watch at an orchestra concert, I do wish this video wouldn't focus so much on the conductor. This is one of the best orchestras in the world and it'd be nice to actually see them.

Bits of it are easier on the French bassoon, but it's still quite a bear.

This is a hard concerto to like, if I'm honest. It's about twice as long as it needs to be and it's too consonant. That said, love to hear such a rare piece, and the playing is gorgeous! Wonderfully energetic, nice and light, something this piece really needs.

@MrPwoltz I assume you mean bringing the pitch 'down to' A-440; my basson is tuned to A-442.
Since posting this video I've had a few rehearsals and a concert with a local community band. Turns out it was just a problem of being out-of-practice with my ear; the French bassoon is very easy to adj...

This was handed out at our community band's last rehearsal to maybe play at an upcoming concert, but I don't know what to think of it. I get that it's a march. I get that the main tune is (intentionally or otherwise) a knockoff of a Christmas carol. But I can't for the life of me figure out wh...

I can't speak for the viola, but the bassoon part *does* have that scale at the end. In any case, it may be hard, but it's so much fun! I'm hoping I can convince the local community band director to do the bassoon/band arrangement of it at some point.

@Bassoonandsax I'd heard this, myself, but I'm not sure if I believe it, given how difficult the bottom fifth still is to play pianissimo without the pitch going through the roof. Then again, as I've never played a pre-whisper bassoon, I can't really speak for the improvement.

The purpose of this channel is to promote the French bassoon, a wonderful, once-ubiquitous instrument which is slowly going extinct. For ten years I played, with considerable success, the German-system bassoon--a Fox Renard 240--and was on my way to a performance degree. Unfortunately, my mental health deteriorated very rapidly as my then-undiagnosed bipolar disorder worsened, and I soon had to drop out and sell my Fox.
The next summer I got a chance to try the French bassoon for the first time. I had long been interested in it, but never had I actually played one. I fell in love. And now, finally, a year later, after two years of not playing, I have a bassoon once again: a 1981 Selmer. I'm going French and I'm not going back.
Go French!
Gorgeous. With ONE exception... at the five-minute mark, when the organ enters. I wanted that organ to really roar, make the building shake, and it just doesn't. That's the easiest way to ruin this finale.
