Yes, they can happen "by accident", in the sense that if a tigress got in a pride of lions the head male(s) would most likely go for it. It's never good idea, but it's not like they're only FORCED to mate, as some would describe. Back when lion and tiger ranges did overlap, ligers were occasional...
