Free Keys is a Progressive Rock Trio from Tehran, formed on winter 2006 when drummer Ash and Singer/guitarist Poo met bassist Gigly in their rehearse room.Being born in a country where playing Rock music is illegal, the members decided to get out of their hometown in search for freedom of speech but are still somehow confined by countless laws and restrictions surrounding the Persian Youth. Ash is having military service issues, meaning that he cannot leave the country unless he does 2 years of military service for the Iranian Goverment, while Arya, who left a year ago when he was ineligible for military service, can't come back because he is now 18.
Free Keys' is influenced by a huge array of bands, the biggest ones being King Crimson, Tool and the Mars Volta. However, the band's main goal is to have a unique sound. Lyrically, Free Keys focuses on Dreaming and the human mind, while touching other subjects such as politics and philosophy. Their first demo CD, recorded on summer 2007 but never officially released, is called "Dreamers never search for titles, except for this one occasion!" and refers to the fact the name Free Keys was suggested to Ash in one his dreams. The demo contains Three Tracks and a live cover version of Tool's 'Lateralus'. The band later performed two underground shows in Tehran with those songs and some other unrecorded material, at the risk of getting arrested by their government. A week prior to their first show, the Iranian Police raided another secret gig in the outskirts of Tehran and arrested the performers as well as some attendees and later labeled their act "Satanic". This not only raised the members' already high level of anxiety, but scared loads of fans who wanted to attend the shows. Regardless, the band sold all the 100 tickets for both shows and they were both held succesfully.
At the moment, The band is looking to perform shows on the international stage before recording their debut album.
