There are traditions, including Ali there are 12 Caliphs or Imams, Mehdi the final is in ocultation,
Ali has other titles like ABUL HASSAN(Father of Imam Hassan), ABU TURAB(Father of the Soil),
Ali was the first to accept the message of the prophet Muhammad at the age of only 14 years,
Ali the son in law of Prophet Muhammad.
Ali the Husband of Daughter (FATIMA(as)) of Prophet Muhamamd.
Ali the father of Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain.
Ali is the braviest and most knowledgeble person in the muslims, he helped bravely in all battles of Islam like BADAR, UHAD,KHANDAQ(DITCH), KHAIBER,
Ali is accepted as fourth caliph of the self made Caliphat of the muslims, But he accepted as the First imam of Islam declared by Allah through Arch angel Gabrial in the wordsof Muhammad, i.e

Prophet said the following about Imam Ali: 'Whomsoever's master (mawla) I am, this Ali is also his master.'
Moula Ali Murtaza(as) was martyred by a Khawrji out law Ibne Muljim(LA) during the morning prayer on 21 Ramadan.

Abdullah bin Abbas through his own chain of narrators in his book Hilyatu'l-Auliya relates: "When the following verse of the holy Qur'an was revealed: '(As for) those who believe and do good, surely they are the best of men. Their reward with their Lord is gardens of perpetuity beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein for ever.
Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him; that is for him who fears his Lord.' (98:7-8), the Holy Prophet, addressing Ali, said: 'O Ali, the best of creatures (Khairu'l-bariyya) in this holy verse refers to you and your followers (Shia). On the Day of Resurrection, you and your followers (Shia) shall attain such a position that Allah will be pleased with you, and you will be pleased with Him.'"
