Fred Coon - I play a two finger style of banjo I learned from my father who learned it from his, uncle, Otis Green, in Boone County, West Virginia in the 1930's.
Later in life, I modified this style and now mostly play with one finger. My thumb stays on the 5th string and I do a mix of up picking with down stroke using the first finger only.

About Me:
The Field Recorder's Collective has turned a few of my collections into CD's that you can listen to. Believe me folks, this is the real thing.
Visit their site and scroll down the page to see Frank George (FRC 407), Aunt Jenny Wilson (FRC 408).

I encourage all of you to look around for those undiscovered treasures today and value them. They are all around us.
A few of my "old" friends, who were young then, are still alive and kicking and still playing. One in particular, J.P, Fraley, is playing two tunes on page two in my "Favorites" section.

Band Members:
The Springfed Band: Tony Norris, Fred Coon, Bill Burke, Megan Buckanon, Elana Gonzales:: Other band - Les Preston, Lou Ann Preston, Bill Burke, Fred Coon
Influences:
My tunes come from a variety of people including my father, Manderville Fred Coon, "Aunt" Jenny Wilson, Russell Fluhearty, Franklin W. George, John Fitzgerald Hilt, Mike Seeger, David Holt, Doc Watson, Tab Ward, Wade Ward, and many, many others from whose tunes and stories I collected or have played with throughout the years.
Sounds Like:
The other day, my friend David Holt told me about new videos he has put on his site, including an interview with Wade Mainer.
Wade plays the two finger style like my father and my dad's Uncle, Otis Green.
I hope that I sound like me but who is that? I've played with an awful lot of folks in the mountains. Not sure it sounds like anyone but people tell me they like my style so I will just keep playing. Thanks for listening.

Excellent playing again, of course and thank you for getting on u-tube as well. I'm working on Mississippi Sawyer rght now, as a result of your playing that with Les and Louanne and really needed to hear it being played "clean". banjobob of scottsdale.
