Alfreda Mitchell, stage name, Freda Mitchell has been sitting in the front of the church singing and praising God since she was 5 years old. At the young age of 10, she sang in the radio/TV choir for Greater St. John Baptist Church, the church where she grew up.

As a young adult, shortly after joining the 100-voice Echoes of Zion Choir, Freda became one of its lead vocalists and later became lead vocalist for the St. John Specials, a group of four young ladies.
