FRVS is about the friendship and rivalry between Fox Mulder and Alex Krycek, and includes also their many friends. The series isn't a continuation of "The X-Files" series, rather it is a dramedy 'spin-off' of sorts in which the characterizations of the X-Files characters are slightly different.
