Extremely rare footage of Judy Garland receiving a Tony Award for her historic engagement at the Palace Theatre. I don't think this has ever been on Youtube, or widely broadcast. This is raw, uncut footage of Judy giving her 'Thank you' speech. There are a few things that are particularly fascinating about it. First, Judy seems very shy & vulnerable. Normally, I try to avoid this kind of interpretation. I'm not a master of body language & speech. But THIS - THIS is a facet of Judy that while expressed many times by those who knew her has rarely been captured in a moment for the world to see. Of course, we've seen it in her movies & concerts, we hear it in her singing ... this is different. THIS is Judy ... & I see something that I hadn't clearly seen before ... how vulnerable & fragile she really was. She stumbled to think that others could even see the beauty of her gifts & appreciate them. Amazing. Second, in the background you can hear the voice of a 'mystery man' giving directions. Clearly, Judy had to give her speech more than once for his satisfaction. Judy was known as 'the one-take girl' ... & yet here, when she has to find the words to acknowledge an award given to her for something that she gave to us, she seems to hesitate ... her eyes cast downward several times.'Please like me, I can't believe you like me.' We love you, Judy! Thank you. The 6th Annual Tony Awards (Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre), presented by Helen Hayes & the American Theatre Wing, took place at the Waldorf-Astoria Grand Ballroom on March 30th 1952. This may be a press release ... it's difficult to determine, except for the possible clue at the beginning. There are other recipients on the complete footage who's speech's are intact, as a single take. I do know that the awards were in thier infancy & not quite as formal at the time. If anyone has more information, please share. I left the footage of Judy completely intact with rough cuts & flaws, de-synchronized audio & out of focus ... just as it was. I like it this way. *No copyright infringement intended.* http://www.youtube.com/user/MicheleBell1
