Thank you.
Just got finished reading Isaacson's biography of Jobs. He was indeed one of a kind; not always the most endearing character to come down the road but his dedication to perfection was totally focused. He made wonderful products and he knew what we wanted before we even knew it.

Seems kind of silly to try to blend western based on the diatonic (12 tone) scale and Indian music, which deals in quarter tones. Both have to give up a great deal of their flexibility in order to work together.

Thanks! I've never seen Richter play. The first thing I noticed is how physically big the man was. His hands were massive in size.
I listened to my recording of Rubenstein right after viewing this. Let's face it: Both were virtuosos at the piano and neither, IMHO, was "better" than the other. E...

Fair ships, both! You need to bring them up to SFO and do a summer race out to the Farallones and back. No offense, but that race looked like a walk in the park. I think the idea of bringing the kids aboard was terrific. Good on you all.

Mahler: Symphony No. 10: Adagio - Part 1 of 3
Symphony No. 10: Adagio
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Conducted by Leonard Bernstein
Vienna Philharmonic
Also it should be noted that he plunged into composing his "Das Lied" sketches, according to Theodor Adorno, resulting from long solo walks, right on the heels of the 8th. And after "Das Lied von Der Erde" was finished he immediately started his 9th Symphony. A sick man wouldn't have such energy.

Thanks for posting. A great portrait of a jazz legend. I've enjoyed his music for years, but I tell you he was a manipulative, self-indulgent, miserable, spoiled, selfish man from the beginning. The people he touched knew his artistic genius and for that reason gave way more than they should have...

John Raitt, along with Gordon MacRae, were probably the greatest stage baritones of their day. And both sang exactly the same roles in "Oklahoma" and "Carousel" - Raitt on Broadway and MacRae in the movies. Of the two, I think Raitt was the most gifted.

One of the unfortunate things I notice about all these DFD vids is that no one comments on his accompanist, Gerald Moore, who was one of the best Schubert guys around. He and DFD had a long, long collaboration and produced some great recordings on DG.

What a great vid. I love watching Bernstein, who I consider one of the best interpreters of Mahler's music. The soprano was just wonderful. Thanks.
-
I've never bought into LB's notion that that this movement (and the symphony itself) was somehow Mahler's "documentation," or premonition, of his own death or, for that matter, the death of tonality. Bernstein's assertions are too pat and not backed up by the historical facts of the composer's li...

Mahler: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen - Janet Baker / John Barbirolli.
Dame Janet Baker sings one of the most beautiful songs of Mahler. Sir John Barbirolli conducts the New Philharmonia Orchestra.
What a nice rendition. Baker has has a really wonderful quality to her voice which is very compelling. I also like Thomas Hampson's recordings of this song, which I consider to be the greatest of Mahler's lieder.
