2007 UAW Bargaining Convention Uncensored
The 2007 UAW/Big 3 Contract Negotiations resulted in historic give-backs to the corporations at the expense of workers. A 2nd tier wage/benefits structure was permitted for new hires. Their wages were slashed by half. They will not receive health care nor a pension. Current UAW retiree health care became the union's responsibility with the creation of multi-billion dollar VEBA funds comprised of Big 3 stock. Such an arrangement forces the union into the role of fellow Big 3 stock price manipulator -perhaps advocating layoffs, plant closings, outsourcing, etc.- to protect the VEBA, rather than fighting those same tactics to protect workers, families, and communities. Members of Soldiers of Solidarity and other concerned UAW members attended the 2007 Bargaining Convention to try to squash these anti-worker, anti-union plans.
Salt of The Earth (1954 • Hollywood 10)
"Salt of the Earth" was produced, written and directed by victims of the Hollywood blacklist. Unable to make films in Hollywood, they looked for worthy social issues to put on the screen independently. This film never would have been made in Hollywood at the time, so it is ironic that it was the anti-communist backlash that brought about the conditions for it to be made. In many ways it was a film ahead of its time. Mainstream culture did not pick up on its civil rights and feminist themes for at least a decade.
This film entered the public domain in 1982 and was selected for the National Film Registry in 1992.
