Considering the attitudes of that period, I find it quite surprising (in a good way) how often you see older actresses like Hepburn, Greer Garson, Bette Davis, Jean Arthur, etc. playing romantic leads and also how popular they were as stars.

A complete disregard for correct accents here - though that's pretty typical of the films of the period. Few notable exceptions like Bette Davis (The Letter, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex) and Paul Muni (Life of Emile Zola, Juarez and many others)
