About Me:
By definition, a Firebrand is a burning implement of creation and destruction, a visionary individual who incites others to conflict or action, one who deliberately foments trouble and radical change.
Firebrands began mixing hard rock, metal, funk and electronica in 2005, writing songs about a search for freedom, truth and beauty with sharp political overtones. The band members are of 3 different nationalities, but all grew in up Singapore, and so have all had their fill of authoritarian pie. They launched their debut album in September 2006, titled First the Flash, Then the Pulse and subsequently began touring the region and beyond. The album was initially distributed under EMI Singapore, which turned out to be a mistake, because they did not deliver on their word in many aspects. Later Firebrands amicably severed ties with EMI, and began promoting and distributing independently under their self-created label, Groovyrecords.
In 2007 Firebrands played festivals in Taiwan and Australia, opened for Puddle of Mudd and Tommy Lee in Dubai, headlined concerts in Vietnam and India, and in early 2008, and performed showcases in Los Angeles and in New York for A&R. They got some nibbles but no bites. They continued to play gigs and even national scale festivals back home, headlining a few, and sometimes opening for larger acts passing through. Notably, they also created a monthly local gig called Deafcon, featuring local bands, solo artists, percussion groups, animation works, and dancers, which ran for over a year.
By these means, Firebrands established themselves locally as a top act, and were featured in dozens of print publications, were interviewed on national radio a few times, and appeared live on television performing for such national events as new years eve countdown celebrations. They also shot a music video in late 2006 for their single Scarecrow and the Fire which receives airplay at home and abroad, as far away as Paraguay, on various radio and music television channels.
However these small achievements dont add up to much in the grand scheme of things. Firebrands still find themselves without the resources they need to record a second album professionally and to promote and distribute it independently. It is a sad fact that no band based in Singapore has been able to sell albums at even a half-decent rate locally. Firebrands hope to promote a second album overseas, and begin touring again, whatever that takes.
So at present Firebrands are writing new material for a hopeful second album, and are expected to make another surge forward in 2009, carrying on the expression they began two years ago. Having departed from pointing the angry finger at the problem, Firebrands are now concerned with creating and exploring a new world with their music, pushing the limits of heavy and sweeping soundscapes, with less in between.
The members of the band have a sense that time is slipping by and all they can do is stick together and forge on ahead, but the answers as to what their place as musicians are in this world have become less clear. Who buys music anymore? How can they build a truly loyal fan base? How can they stay together if nothing changes at home? Like so many others, Firebrands are looking for the break they deserve, but have lost faith in the record label signed initially.
Firebrands represent a vengefully honest journey from the point of becoming politically aware, to early adulthood disenchantment, to escapism, to the point of discovering for themselves what true beauty and freedom are about, and living and pursuing that through music with reckless abandon.
