Steroids are NOT behind every big lift. I was never a top lifter, but in 1978 I raw benched 505 touch and go, at 242. I have nothing to gain by lying 33 years later , so please believe me when I say I never used steroids in my life -- just trained like mad since I was 16. Of course, at 5-7 and wi...

Notice Reding bombed out, as did Patera. Alexeev had a very sub-par day as well. Remember, this competition was just a day and a half after the Munich massacre, where most of the victims were themselves (Israeli) weightlifters. The superheavies were all still pretty rattled, and it shows. Very un...

207kg Snatch - Unofficial Jr World Record

An outstanding lift. He certainly could have done this without straps, but when you snatch a lot (in frequency and in poundage) straps help hands stay healthy. And a competition platform is almost twice as big as the one Pat used, so the lift would have stayed in bounds at a meet. Also: people wh...

This is one of the best C&Js ever, partly because it was so sloppy. Big Andrei just muscled it the whole way -- amazing, amazing show of raw strength. Pulled it high, stood up easily in awkward position, and jerked it VERY high. This definitely could have been a 272.5 day. I never heard what Chem...

Question: I know DLs are not part of Pat's daily training, so how often do you have Pat try them? (And did the Bulgarians also do these occasionally, as another way of seeing where they were strengthwise?)--Finrod

"Strongman" Warrick Brant 340kg "squat" for reps
International "Strongman" Warrick Brant doing 340kg "squats" for reps

The criticism here is unwarranted. Brant isn't pretending he's doing competition-style squats -- he's doing a heavy squat exercise that will HELP his squat (and his deadlift even more) and will help build strength and endurance for Strongman competitions. Believe me, Paul Anderson did these, too.

No bench shirts until the 1980s. Hepburn was raw all the way. And his first 500 B.P. was PRIMITIVE: lying on a cheap flat bench, three guys had to lift the weight off the floor to Doug's chest. Then he pressed from a dead stop, no arch in his back, no leg drive--nothing but arm, shoulder and p...

So impressive: this is more than Paul Anderson squatted at the same age, I think.
Question: Does Pat squat at the same particular point in a workout, or a different points? (Such as, always at the start of a workout, always at the end, right after cleans, etc...) Do you think there's a best time ...

In the book the reader knows there is still hope, because the Mouth refers to THE spy. Gandalf instantly realizes that that the Enemy believes only ONE halfling entered Mordor, and believes he was only a "spy," not someone with the Ring. Thus, Gandalf knows Frodo (or Sam) is still free and carryi...

Yes, this was EASY. VA usually did his serious training alone, but some of his teammates saw him C&J 565 - 580 with no trouble a few times in 1976, before the Games. I saw him training AT the '76 Olympics, and he front-squatted 573 for a lightning-fast double that was SHOCKING. Valery Shary (Gold...
The narration DOES say he's pressing 203 kg, but it's a mistake. Rigert's all-time best press was a world record 198 kg done in 1972, a year AFTER this video. The 203 kg he made in the 1971 Friendship Cup was actually in the Clean and Jerk. You can look it up by googling Rigert's list of records...
