Pippo conveys the heart rendering pathos of this aria using all his vocal gifts...mezza voce, pianiissimo, full open sound etc. Just wondering if anyone out there knows if Jussi Bjoeriing ever recorded this aria.

When it came to singing these Sicilian and Neapolitan popular arias, NO ONE could do it better than Pippo!!! The "motivo" in his voice is unsurpassed!!!

Too bad we don't have this recording with Victoria and her frequent partner Jussi Bjoerling...what a magnificent rendition that would have been. Jussi's voice was darkening around this time and suitable for the Otello role.

Let's not forget to mention a "little known Swedish tenor" I think his name was Jussi Bjoerling...maybe you all have heard of him. His was a voice of beauty and power with a glorious high C!

Very few tenors attempt that interpolated B flat...it exposes the voice too much and I can only recall a recording of Bjoerling doing it later in life. Not Pavarotti and certainly not Domingo. Bravo Mario!

As magnificent as this recording is, it still highlights many of Lanza's shortcomings. For one, his voice sounds older and more baritonal than most tenors at his age. And his vocal line is choppy and uneven..obviously he lived to belt out those thrilling high notes. Drinking, weight problems, ph...

Bjoerling had more Slavic steel in his voice, however Bezcala indeed could be the legitimate successor to Wunderlich who tragically left us too soon. I hear a lot of Fritz in this tenor's voice.
