http://childreninjail.com/ - WILLIAMSON COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S COURT, OCT. 30, 2007. Scott Medlock, an attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project, discusses today's special session and the commissioners' 5-0 vote to amend and continue their contract with the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) to manage the T. Don Hutto family detention center. Mr. Medlock expresses his regret that the county commissioners have not considered the county's legal liability more seriously, and he states, "I would not be surprised to see lawsuits related to violations of detainees' civil rights in the near future." http://childreninjail.com/ - WILLIAMSON COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S COURT, OCT. 30, 2007. Scott Medlock, an attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project, recommends to the commissioners that Williamson County "get out of the business of imprisoning children," due to the many legal liabilities for the county that the practice entails. Mr. Medlock's warnings come three weeks after Jay Brown, attorney for the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), made claims at the same commissioner's court that the county had no liability for violations of the law that might occur at the T. Don Hutto family detention center. After Mr. Brown's presentation, the commissioners made arrangements with him to meet with CCA attorneys in order to work out amendments to the county's contract with CCA that would attempt to indemnify the county of any liability and allow CCA to communicate directly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Today, the commissioners voted to approve those amendments to the Hutto contract and asked no questions of Mr. Medlock regarding his claims of the county's continued liability despite the amendments. Read these amendments on pages 21-24 at http://wilcogov.org/commissioners/agenda_tab/archive/2007/10 -30-2007wAtt.pdf. http://childreninjail.com/ - WILLIAMSON COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S COURT, TEXAS, OCT. 9, 2007. Faced with the threat that Williamson County would cancel its contract with Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) to sponsor the T. Don Hutto Residential Center, CCA sent Houston trial lawyer Jay Brown to advise the County Commissioners that the County has no liability for any violations of law that occur at the Hutto facility. Hutto is run by CCA pursuant to its contract with the County. The Commissioners voted to delay their decision and consult with CCA's representatives.
