I searched and found the same story you mentioned, but it was about a guy named Shoki(Japanese; Zhong1 Kui2 鍾馗 in Mandarin) who took an imperial exam and his acceptance was turned down by the Emperor due to his appearance, therefore he killed himself; after his death, he was believed to be an expeller for evil spirits by people on earth.
