The Alice Ferguson Foundation was established in 1954 as a non-profit organization chartered in the state of Maryland. Our mission is to provide experiences that encourage connections between people, the natural environment, farming and the cultural heritage of the Potomac River Watershed, which lead to personal environmental responsibility. We share the wonder and excitement of the Potomac River, a working farm, woods and wetlands each year with more than 10,000 students from the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area.
*Hard Bargain Farm Environmental Center programs reach 4,500 students from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia with quality outdoor-based experiences for appreciation, awareness and lifelong stewardship of our natural environment. The education program for elementary to middle school students is designed to promote understanding and stewardship of the natural resources in the Potomac River watershed and the legacy of farming in America. Courses at Hard Bargain Farm immerse students in various field studies involving fun and innovative hands-on activities and field investigations designed to engage all learning styles.
*Bridging the Watershed environmental education program, in partnership with the National Park Service and area schools, provides personally meaningful, educational experiences that connect high school students to their place in the natural and cultural world. Last year, 7,500 secondary school students from the capital region visited national parks with their science classes to conduct field studies. The trips give students an authentic experience that allows them to take measurements and make field observations just as a scientist would do.
*The Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative, formed in 2005, seeks to address the trash problem in the Potomac from a watershed-wide approach to benefit the entire region. AFF's objectives are to challenge regional leaders to work collaboratively; to bring together key stakeholders to research and explore alternative, innovative, cost-effective solutions that will have long-term impact; and to improve general public education and awareness that can shift individual behaviors.
