Basically the squad member is part of the main plot, but if you have the dlc I'm guessing you take him along with you to the Normandy as a crew member, where you propably get a loyalty mission or something.
They all seem to think it's connected to the game and is crucially needed because the game is unfinished without it. Bioware are trying to reward dedicated fans who went out of there way to pre order the game.
I Spent so mucj time trying save up for the collectors edition! So the fact that people are boycotting because of "this" is just BS. Sucks that the so called "fans" are doing this to bioware.
