Not holograms - and the projectors are not back stage; this is a use of a very old trick called "Pepper's Ghost" (it's used in the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland; google "Pepper's Ghost" - invented in the 1860s).

No, they didn't.

It's exactly what you see.

Since the camera only has one "eye", that weird shape looks exactly like two flat squares when the camer shoots it straight on.

They use the same effect in movies for what's called "foreground miniature" shots

You could at least have used all modern cars - roofwalks? Full ladders? A wood-sheathed non-mechanical reefer?
