The Howard Hughes Medical Institute's 2005 Holiday Lectures on Science series. In part 1, Dr. Sean B. Carroll traces the development of evolutionary biology from Darwin's voyage on the HMS Beagle through the advent of modern genetics. in part 2, Dr. David M. Kinglsey discusses the dramatic influence natural selection is capable of exerting on wild populations. In part 3, Dr. Kingsley examines the intertwined relationship between evolutionary biology and developmental biology. In part 4, Dr. Carroll returns to discuss the evolutionary origin of novel innovations. To conclude, Drs. Carroll and Kingsley, along with Dr. Michael Ruse and Father James A Wiseman, discuss reconciling religious beliefs and modern science.

In part 2, Dr. Nadia Rosenthal discusses adult stem cells and their role in regeneration of normal tissue. In part 3, Dr. Melton discusses approaches to utilize stem cells in medical treatment. In part 4, Dr. Rosenthal discusses the role stem cells play in aging. To conclude, Drs. Melton and Rosenthal are joined by Drs. Debra J.H. Matthews and Jonathan D. Moreno to discuss the ethical issues relating to embryonic research.
