I had just finished using the Hoodlum and the North 49 mini-hatchet to do another 500 chops into wood, to check the edge retention/durability, this time I was limbing some low light trees. Both handled this similar, again the axe was better in very tight situations and the blade where it was more open and especially where the branches are very light as it could sweep off many at a time.
Being curious if the problems with the edge deforming and chipping as noted in previous videos were steel issues which could have effected the blade itself, I attempted to split a piece of 4" spruce. The work was light, I was actually sitting on a log so really could not swing heavily to impact the blade and the Hoodlum snapped on the third hit and of course right through the notch. The edge had also rippled dramatically in several places just on small knot contacts. The break was dramatic as the crack ran not only vertical but also horizontal.
This is extremely poor performance especially considering the edge is from 0.025-0.035" thick and ground at 17-19 dps. With that amount of steel on the edge, for the edge to turn so dramatically on small knots until such light impacts is simply abysmal performance. Combining that lack of strength with the basic explosion and brittle failure is simply an embarrassing performance especially compared to the Junglas or even the MT-151.

A video about the fittingly named Buck 309 "Companion" pocket knife. It is light and compact, but well constructed. It takes so little effort to carry, and it handles everyday cutting tasks. It is the least expensive U.S.A made knife in this style, and it is GOOD! Blade edges need touching up and the pen blade has a less than ideal grind. Overall, a very nice knife and a joy to carry!
Contents: 1. Overview: materials, quality, size 2. Comparison with other slip joints 3. Cutting: paper, cardboard, wood, apple
