Just for the heck of it.. could you try to suck out the air inside the panel with a vacuum pump?
It may give interesting images (even possibly recognition-able TV images), if anything.
As far as I understand they use low pressure noble gases, but low pressure air.. could work?

For me it seems like it use a switching power-supply to drive the monitor circuit(that use some power). and when the "small reserve" is used up.. it's refilled quickly by a pulse (DC-DC converter).
