The Gypsies, or Roma, as they are known in many countries originated as a nomadic group from the deserts of Rajasthan.. Their music is diverse today, with styles from many different nations where they live. Included here is gypsy music from Turkey, Armenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, France, Italy, and Spain, as well as Rajasthan in Indial.
Tibetan Traditional Music
This playlist includes Tibetan folk music, Buddhist music, as well as the music of the prebuddhistic Bon Po.
Andalusian Music
Andalusia, in the south of Spain is known for the Islamic influences of north Africa, as well as Jewish music. See my Sephardic Music playlist to listen to more examples of Spanish Jewish music. Andalousian musical styles are found also in Algeria. Mozarabic music is the music of Christians who lived in Spain under Muslim rule.
Uyghur Music
The Uyghur people of Central Asia predominantly dwell currently in what is now western China. The region of the Uyghur is also called East Turkestan. This area is mostly desert and includes the Takla Makan, one of the driest deserts in the world. The Uyghur people are very ancient. Their area was on the crossroads of Central Asia, the old Silk Road to the west. This area of China is called Sinkiang, or Xinkiang. Another designation is Uyghuristan.
Georgian Music from the Caucasus
Georgia, formerly a portion of the Soviet Union, is now an independent country. Georgia is renowned for it's ancient polyphonic music. Abkhasia, Tushetia and Mokhevia are regions of Georgia. The Geogian Orthodox Church is the most prevalent Christian church in Georgia. It's liturgy is closely related to the Byzantine tradition.
Albanian Music
This playlist presents a cross section of Albanian music through the ages. The music of Epirus is featured. Albania is associated with many regions and subcultures including the Arberesh, Laberians, Himara, Kosovo, the Arvanite, the Delvines, etc. Illyria is an ancient name for Albania. Albania is renowned for it's ancient polyphonic music. There are some that say that ancient Albanians were forebears of Caucasian peoples such as the Azerbaijani and the Armenians. Over the last few thousand years many cultural groups have mingled in what now is modern Albania. This study is beyond the scope of this playlist of available modern tunes and dances.
Romanian Music
Romania derives it's name from early settlers from Italy. This playlist presents a selection of traditional folk music and a variety of modern musical works from Romania. Moldova, an independent country to the east of modern Romania is considered by some to be populated predominantly by ethnic Romanians. Transylvania is a well known province of Romania. The Vlach or Wallachians were an early group that settled in the territory of Romania.
Circassian Music
The Circassians are divided into a number of tribal groups. This playlist presents selections of traditional music from most of them. Included are the music of the Adige, Cherkess, Kafkas, Kabarday ,Shapzug and the Ubykh. Circassia is just north of Abkazia and Georgia, in the region of the Caucasus, bordering on the Black Sea. I have included some songs from the Nart song cycle of Circassia. The Adige people are among the most ancient nations of the world.
Latvian Music
Traditional and modern music from Latvia. Featured on this playlist is the music of the Kokle, the Latvian zither, related to the Kantele of the FInns and Karelians. The Latvians have a very ancient culture, stemming from the Bronze Age. Their area has had many policital designations over the milleniums. Latvia has been called Courland and Gotland. This list presents music from subcultures of the Latvians such as the Suiti and the Latgalians. The Curonians, mentioned in one video are the people of Courland. Modern groups such as Ilge and Auli give us good examples of traditional folklore in modern terms. :Latvian music is quite diverse, and their folk dances are quite excellent.
Chuvash Music
The Chuvash are a Turkic people who may have originated in Uighurstan in the farmost western desert area of what is now China. They have migrated far from their original homeland into Central Asia, settling in numerous enclaves as far afiled as the Caucasus, where the Kabarday culture is just one of the Chuvash areas. The Chuvash are known for keeping largely to thier own 'pagan' heritage, wherein they worshipped God as 'Turin.' They are known to have resisted conversion to Islam or Christianity in many cases. It could be that they are what is known as the Turanians. Chuvasia, in central Russia, was settled by Chuvash from the Caucasus, who also migrated to the Balkans where, mixing with Slavs, created what is known as Bulagria. Transdnistra is another region of Russia populated by Chuvash. Chuvashia has a large admixture of Finno-Ugric Mari people.
Thailand Music
Thailand is a kingdom in Southeast Asia. In it's long history Thailand has been Hindu and Buddhist over the centuries. This playlist begins with classical music and Buddhist music, traditional theatre and puppet dances. We also see a selection of movie music, pop music from earlier decades, popular stage personalities. As a finishing touch I include the songs and dances of the Sao Xiang Louang, which are extraordinarily beautiful.
Galician Celtic Music
Galicia is a region of northern Portugal as well as Spain. The Iberians are culturally linked to Ireland and the British Isles as well as the Celtic peoples of Western Europe: the Ligurians of Italy and the Gallo Celtic peoples of Helvetia, etc.
