About Eric Byler Filmmaker

Channel contains clips from my film and TV work as writer/director, plus some short documentaries I've made just for YouTube. I have videos about Iraq and North Korea, and about the "Comfort Women" resolution recently passed in the U.S. House of Reps. During 2008, I volunteered along with many other filmmakers on a channel called "United for Obama" (youtube.com/UnitedForObama).

I am probably best known for the film "Charlotte Sometimes" (CharlotteSometimesTheMovie.com). But my YouTube videos have attracted nearly 3 million viewers.

In 2007 and 2008 I worked with Annabel Park and Jeff Man on an INTERACTIVE DOCUMENTARY about the immigration battle in Virginia, now an award-winning feature length documentary about politics and immigration.

ERIC BYLER was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for his debut feature Charlotte Sometimes (2002), hailed by film critic Roger Ebert as a breakthrough for Asian American filmmakers. Eric's second feature AMERICANESE (2006) won both the Audience Award and the Special Jury Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival. His fourth feature film and first documentary — 9500 LIBERTY (2010) co-directed with Annabel Park — won the Audience Award at the St. Louis International Film Festival, the Jury Award at the Charlotte Film Festival, and the Breakthrough Filmmakers Award at the Phoenix Film Festival. It opened in theaters in over 30 U.S. cities and premiered on the MTV Networks in September. Eric and Annabel are also the founders of Coffee Party USA, a fact-based, solutions-oriented democracy movement hosting a summit on money in politics Jan. 20-23, 2011 in Washington DC.

Eric was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Northern Virginia and in Hawai'i. He majored in film studies at Wesleyan University in Connecticut where his senior thesis film Kenji's Faith (1994) went on to become a finalist for the Student Academy Awards, screen at the Sundance Film Festival, and win six film festival awards. His third feature TRE (2007) won the Special Jury Award at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival before being released theatrically by Cinema Libre Studio in 2008. Other Charlotte Sometimes accolades include a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Jacqueline Kim at the 2003 Independent Spirit Awards, the Audience Award at South by Southwest, and the Special Jury Award at the Florida Film Festival. He is also the director of "My Life Disoriented," and Asian American high school comedy that aired on PBS' Independent Lens.
