About Me:

Physician and pianist Christopher Shih has been hailed by the Washington Post as "flawless" and "compelling," with "an easy command of the instrument and an uncanny ability to project material." He has performed in major venues in over a dozen countries around the globe, including France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Taiwan, and countless cities in the United States. Festival appearances include the Aspen Music Festival and the Banff International Chamber Music Festival. He has soloed with numerous orchestras, including repeated engagements with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in Washington DC. His performance with the NSO on the Capitol Lawn for an audience of 50,000 prompted the Post to declare, "If Shih is as gifted in medicine as he is in music, he has some serious career decisions to make. His performance was fluent, gracious, miraculously light, and a joy to the ear." Other past orchestral engagements include the Georgetown, Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, New England Conservatory, Harvard-Radcliffe, Newton, and Paris Garde Republicaine orchestras.

In 1997 Christopher was one of the top four Americans in the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where he was a press and audience favorite. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram raved, "He demonstrated a magical touch in voicing and a fine Chopinesque rubato....a total sense of style across three centuries. For Shih, technical control supports impeccable musicianship." Christopher is also the grand prize winner of three international amateur piano competitions: Washington DC in 2006, Boston in 2007, and Paris in 2008.

Christopher is a board-certified gastroenterologist practicing in Maryland. He received his B.A. from Harvard and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins. He did his internal medicine residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and his gastroenterology fellowship training at Johns Hopkins. He currently lives in Ellicott City with his wife and two daughters. He frequently collaborates with his wife, who is a violinist on faculty at the Peabody Preparatory Institute in Baltimore.

Chris - Bravo my friend! I hope you're doing well these days. It's been a long time since it was you and Richard v. me on the hoops court at Potomac Community Center. Wish we could tangle again (although I don't think I could hit those threes anymore).. Best to you and your family. Steve

Any chance you might one day record a performance of Ravel's Le Gibet? I think you've got an extraordinarily legato touch that would be very interesting indeed to hear in that piece.
