Listening the opening theme is an experience of it's own.
Very interesting. We're all so used to hearing it in much faster tempo that it's shocking at first but after awhile it's convincing,.

You can find this version on "The Very Best of Al Jolson" CD with 28 tracks from the 1845-49 period. Song was recorded by Al for the first time in the 20s with different arrangement, slightly different lyrics and interpretation and, of course, much younger voice. This one-s also great, nevertheless.

Regarding the style of the opening chords, well, if you prefer
'bigger' sound then check Horowitz, he's really hitting them like
a woodcutter.
