About Me:
The Emergency Fund has experienced tremendous growth since our founding in 1973 by Chicago businessman and philanthropist, Norman H. Stone - of the Stone Container Corporation. Mr. Stone was a true visionary - stirred to act when he read a newspaper article about a Chicago family in need who could not find financial assistance at any social agencies. He was upset to learn that there was no local agency that would give them assistance outside of the holiday season. And so with the values of providing help immediately and without red tape, Mr. Stone founded the Emergency Fund. Since that beginning, with just a handful of supporters, we have built relationships with community leaders and social service agencies throughout greater Chicago. Those partnerships are the very heart of the Emergency Fund.
