Starting at age 6 as a flute student of the Suzuki method, Helen McGarr, now age 16, began her performing career as a concerto soloist with the Salt Lake Symphony at the age of 7 and was also a soloist with the American Fork (Utah) Symphony at the age of 11. She is currently a member of the Utah Youth Symphony. She has been a featured performer on the "From the Top" weekly radio show as well as the "From the Top" PBS television series broadcast Live from Carnegie Hall.

In 2007 Helen took first place in the National MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) Senior Woodwind Competition and was the winner of the National NFMC (National Federation of Music Clubs) Stillman-Kelley Competition.
In 2006 Helen was the first place winner of the National MTNA Junior Woodwind Competition and the Utah State Fair Music Competition (intermediate woodwind division). In 2005 Helen was the first place winner in the UMTA (Utah Music Teachers Association) Concerto Competition (collegiate division) and the UFMC (Utah Federation of Music Clubs) Stillman-Kelley Competition. In 2004 Helen was the first place winner of the UMTA Concerto Competition (junior division) and the second place winner in the 2003 and 2004 Utah State Fair Music Competition. Miss McGarr has received 8 consecutive Superior ratings in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival.

Helen studies flute with Laurel Ann Maurer, and her coach is her mother, Wendy. She studied as well with Robert Langevin and Jim Walker. She has also performed in master classes with Carol Wincenc, Tara O'Connor, Brad Garner, Jeanne Baxtresser, Robert Langevin, Bonita Boyd, Katherine Kemler, and Susan Milan. She lives with her family in Lindon, Utah and is a student at Pleasant Grove High School. She also loves to sing, dance, shop and spend time with her friends.
