The roots of Type O Negative go back to a mid-eighties hardcore band called Carnivore,led by bassist and singer Peter Steele.The trio's music was a harsh mix of hardcore and speed metal,braced with Steele's inflammatory and very politcally incorrect lyrics.Carnivore ultimately broke up and Steele began a full-time job with the New York Parks Department ( a career he always threatened to return to)before teaming up with drummer Sal Abruscato in a new venture initially called Repulsion and then Subzero before settling on Type O Negative.Enlisting keyboardist and childhood friend Josh Silver,along with guitarest Kenny Hickey,the group encompassed everything from Black Sabbath to the Beatles to the Sisters Of Mercy and took Steele's lyrics in a more introspective,psychosexual direction.Signing with Roadrunner records,which had intially released Carnivore's two albums,Type O Negative issued their first album Slow,Deep&Hard in 1991 and the rest is history:
