I am an atheist. That does not mean I eat children, or advocate the eating of children.
It does not mean I rape and pillage, or advocate such actions.
Also, and for the religious among you this is really, REALLY important, it DOES NOT mean that I do not have morals, or that my life is without purpose. You can make that claim if you wish, but it is a baseless claim. And if you do make that claim, then don't be surprised if I make the counter-claim that you like to have anal sex with pigeons. Now whether that means you having sex with the pigeon's anus, the pigeon having sex with your anus, or perhaps you inserting the hapless pigeon into your ass I have no issue with your own preference, but I will make that claim. At least I will be honest in admitting beforehand that it is a baseless claim, I would hope that you would do me the same courtesy in regards to your claim but I am accepting of the fact that I will likely be disappointed.
It means I am a human being, like you, but that I have no belief in there being a god of any kind.
You may, and I respect your right to have that belief - but if you profess your belief I may profess my lack of belief, and if you cite 'evidence' to support your claims then I may choose to point out fallacies in your argument.
Or, maybe, you might help me to learn something I did not know before - if so then let me thank you in advance :)
But that is not an invitation to 'convert' me.
I have been an admitted atheist for quite a short time, only a matter of about six months at the time of writing this.
I was agnostic for the vast majority of my life, until I actually looked at my own belief and questioned it : and it crumbled.
I am, at best, a poetic atheist - I see the beauty inherent in nature, the universe etc, and I almost wish there was a god. Almost :)
But wishing does not make something real, if it did I would be inundated with requests for romantic liaisons from the most beautiful women on the planet.
I believe in natural forces, and I respect their power.
Sometimes that power is awesome, and it may be beyond current human understanding to explain - but I believe that one day we will be able to understand it, if we are allowed to search for those answers.
Many things we once took as absolute proof of the supernatural, of the might and wonder of god, are now known to us as natural forces which are explainable and understandable. I believe that each of those 'unknowns' will eventually be explained without the need to resort to a supernatural cause.
I believe in the freedom of individuals to speak what they think within reason (I do not advocate hate speech, or incitement to violence), to believe what they want, and to be true to who they are such as in their lifestyle.
I may not necessarily agree with that lifestyle, it may even offend me, but that does mean someone else cannot live that way.
There are always exceptions, such as forcing that lifestyle on others through indoctrination, force, fear and intimidation, or other means
Our mindset is not an aberration, it is logical.
It is not from indoctrination or brainwashing.
We are individuals.
We are everywhere.
We are rational.
We are reasonable.
And together we can do anything.
