Assalamu 'alaikom Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu. (May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be with you).
What is the Manhaj (methodology) of the Salaf?
The manhaj (methodology) of the Salaf is to adhere to the Qur'aan and the authentic Sunnah as understood by the Salaf as-Saalih.
The word Salaf is a shortened version of the word 'Salaf as-Saalih', which means the 'Righteous Predecessors'.
It refers specifically to the first three generations of Islaam in which the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) described as being the best generations of Muslims. The first, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and his Sahaabah (companions). The second, the Taabi'een (the followers of the companions). The third, the Tabaa'at-Taabi'een (the followers of the followers of the companions).
Generally, this term refers to all those pious predecessors who followed the way of the Salaf and who have preceded us in time.
This is the true manhaj of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah.
It is reported that a man came to 'Abdullâh b. Mas'ûd -- Allâh be pleased with him -- and asked, "Teach me some comprehensive and beneficial words." He replied, "Worship Allâh and do not associate any partners with Him, and be with the Qur'ân wherever it is. And whoever comes to you with some truth -- whether he is young or old, even if he is hated by you -- then accept [that truth]. And whoever comes lying to you -- even if he is beloved and close -- then reject it from him."
[Abû Bakr Al-Kharâ`itî, Masâwî Al-Akhlâq wa Madhmûmihâ p72].
ItIt is reported from Al-Hasan Al-Basrî that he said, If a man from amongst the Salaf were to be sent forth today, he would not recognize anything from Islam. He put his hand on his cheek and added, Except this prayer (salâh).
Then he said, But by Allâh, this does not apply to the person who lives in this unfamiliar time, never having seen the Righteous Predecessors, but who sees [instead] the innovator calling to his bidah,
and the follower of worldly wealth calling to his materialism, but Allâh protects him from all this and makes his heart love and aspire to those Righteous Predecessors, asking about their way, searching and trying to follow in their footsteps, and adhering to their path. Such is a person who will be recompensed with an immense and great reward. So be you all like this, by Allâhs permission.
[Ibn Waddâh, Al-Bida' Vol. 1 p190].
Shaadh ibn Yahyaa said, "There is no path which is more straight and direct (in leading) to Paradise than the path of the one who travels upon the aathaar (narrations)."[ Reported by al-Laalikaa'ee - Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah no. 112]
It is reported that Al-Awzâ'î said, "Follow the narrations [ways] of those who have preceded (the Salaf) even if people reject you; and beware of people's opinions, even if they beautify them for you."
[Ibn 'Abd Al-Barr, Jâmi' Bayân Al-'Ilm wa Fadlihi Vol.3 p373].
It is reported that Muhammad b. Sirin said, "They used to consider themselves on the [right] path as long as they followed al-athar (guidance of the Sunnah and Salaf as passed down in the narrations)."
[al-Laalikaa'ee - Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah Volume Vol.1 p120].
It is reported that 'Uthmân b. Hâdir said, "I said to Ibn 'Abbâs: 'advise me.' He replied, 'It is upon you to be upright, follow al-athar, and beware of innovating [in religion].'"
[Ibn Battah, Al-Ibânah Al-Kubrâ Vol. 1 p214].
'Umar b. Al-Khattaab ( Allaah be pleased with him) said:
Verily, the followers of opinion are the enemies of the Sunan (the teachings of Allaah's Messenger as passed down in hadith): they were unable to preserve them and their meanings escaped them, and when asked [questions] they were too embarrassed to say 'We don't know,' so they opposed the Sunan with their opinions.
[al-Laalikaa'ee - Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah no.201]

Say: "If ye do love Allah, Follow me(prophet muhammed pbuh): Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who declare that they believe in the revelations that have come to thee and to those before thee? Their (real) wish is to resort together for judgment (in their disputes) to the Evil One, though they were ordered to reject him. But Satan's wish is to lead them astray far away (from the right).
But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction
Deem not the summons of the Messenger among yourselves like the summons of one of you to another: Allah doth know those of you who slip away under shelter of some excuse: then let those beware who withstand the Messenger.s order, lest some trial befall them, or a grievous penalty be inflicted on them.
Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah.
And thus have We, by Our Command, sent inspiration to thee: thou knewest not (before) what was Revelation, and what was Faith; but We have made the (Qur'an) a Light, wherewith We guide such of Our servants as We will; and verily thou dost guide (men) to the Straight Way,-
Way of Allah, to Whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Behold (how) all affairs tend towards Allah
Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire.
It is no less than inspiration sent down to him
