I first heard this on NPR in the early eighties; if memory serves me right,the first few bars was used as an interlude between segments on "All Things Considered",and it was vaguely reminiscent for the theme music for ATC's Ian Sholaes segments w/Duck's Breath alum Merle Kessler.

I was jazzed when I found out this was the ORIGINAL version!!! The late Mr. Dean had to tone down the final verse (ie, substituting "one hell of a man" w/"big,big man") to get radio airplay.

@jeatig I do recall hearing this longer rendition on the radio every now & then.

Was a senior in high school when this came out;quite ironic that Walter Murphy's disco staple "Fifth of Beethoven"--which had a similar intro (ie,Beethoven's 5th symphony)--was released just a couple years after this,as memory serves me right.

One of those hard-to-find favorites you only hear once every other eon-and-a-half whether you need to or not!

Great song--I don' know if anybody noticed,but the tune is reminiscent of another one of my all-time favorites,the old folk song "La Bamba" (the best -known version,of course, recorded by Richie Valens)
