Werner Fischer grew up at the foot of the Swiss Alps a little while before video killed the radio star. Listening to the Beatles & to Bob Dylan made him pick up the guitar & form his first band at the tender age of eleven. Influenced by the rich rythmic & harmonic approaches of Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin & Frank Zappa his playing soon evolved into more fusion-type styles. It was not until long that he was ready for the music of "real" jazz musicians.During the 1990s he fronted the widely acclaimed Pop-group Starfish on their countless live performances throughout Switzerland & many parts of Northern Europe.
After several years of expanding his musical horizon on the North American East Coast he returned to Switzerland in 2003 with a bag full of original compositions, some of which he recorded for his album "Eastbound".
In 2004 he led together with saxophonist Jürg Wickihalder the FISCHER-WICKIHALDER JAZZ COALITION on a tour to Beijing & the North of the People's Republic of China. In 2007 he initiated the SAM TRÜMPY MEMORIAL JAZZ COALITION, a transatlantic octet celebrating the music of the late tenorist. He was invited to play during the Summer Olympics 2008 at Beijing's fancy LAN-Club & the House of Switzerland.
Werner has lately been working with Swedish vocalist Sophie Dunér on "TRAVELOGUE", a new jazz album featuring his latest songs & compositions, & is accompanying MYA AUDREY on her 'SUDDEN BREEZE'-tour. He's currently living in Lucerne and in Beijing where he regularly plays in the legendary CD BLUES CAFE & BAR, as a member of Big John's Blues Band. He has also taught at the Beijing Midi School of Music.
Werner achieves his warm and sensual trademark sound by playing his Gibson L5 Wes Montgomery guitar with the aid of a pick made of semi-precious stone. His playing is most audibly influenced by Wes Montgomery, Ed Bickert and Philip Catherine on the jazzy, John Scofield and Cornell Dupree on the more gutsy bluesy side.
