Tanja Vujinovic: Blipstat Installation (video projections, objects, water, hydrophones, live sound and video processing, computers)
CREDITS: Author: Tanja Vujinovic / Producer: Jan Kušej / Production: Exstat, www.exstat.org / The project has been developed in collaboration with the Marine Biology Station, Piran, Slovenia, http://www.mbss.org/
Description of the project The audio-visual installation Blipstat deals with the exploration of hidden spaces. The Blipstat audiovisual work consists of objects, the transmission of data, and partially live processing of digital visual and sound material. Data retrieved with the help of Marine Biology Station Piran are transmitted to computers, which according to previously defined algorithms produce dynamic and changeable audio-visual signals, which are displayed in the gallery space in near real time. Data retrieved from the station by means of a video camera and sensors that measure meteorological and oceanographic data, together with the data captured by hydrophones in the gallery will continuously provide the elements of the audiovisual installation. These elements will be accompanied by a live video installation whose basis is footage retrieved from the Internet.
Concept of the project The exploration of hidden spaces and the search for new species are being carried out simultaneously within the deep waters of the sea as well as within the Earth's atmosphere and beyond. Footage of so called space serpents, rods, EBEs (extraterrestrial biological entities), and energyzoaea are available on many Internet video services and mainly consist of amateur video recordings or official footage with additional commentary. Energyzoaea belong to the notorious class of animals whose existence is not scientifically proven, and which are studied by cryptozoology. The vague evidence of the existence of energyzoaea began to reemerge in the 1990s, all based on anecdotes, supported by mythology, and a small number of trivial video recordings. Energyzoaea, together with other cryptids such as Big Foot and the giant sea snake, have become a very popular part of the package of para-scientific phenomena. As some sort of container for the projection of imaginary and poetic situations, energyzoaea have sparked a series of questions and polemics about the exploration of hidden spaces and the species that inhabit them. In The Secret Life of Puppets, Victoria Nelson analyzed our need to create and aestheticise simulacra and infuse them with soul, pointing towards the ritual functions such entities play in our lives. In The Tailors' Dummies stories, Bruno Schulz casts these metamorphic, amorphous, transitory creatures as, in his words, a kind of pseudofauna and pseudoflora, the result of a fantastic fermentation of matter. These pseudoforms are the result of fusions of various species, suspended at any transitory moment. Just like the Yeti, Big Foot, and the Loch Ness monster, energyzoaea have also inscribed themselves into the history of real-imaginary creatures within the fabricated in-between spaces of the global imagination. Blipstat juxtaposes popular video footage with scientific measurements and observations of deep-space changes. As a continuation of the Discrete Events in Noisy Domains cycle, Blipstat embodies the tracking of informational noise within cyclic events, and as such continually produces noisy evidence of the potential existence of (un)identified discreet units.
