I spent 2 days in El Remate, Guatemala and the ruins at Tikal. This is kind of a snap shot.
I took a plane across the Peten Jungle from Beleze. It was small, just me and the pilot. It was 2 hours late taking off. They said they had reports of heavy smoke on the runway in Guatemala. When I found a cab I was so flustered I forgot what little Spanish I still knew. I told him it was very cold there and I needed a hot beer. I also told him I was staying 2 years. He was very amused After catching my breath I corrected myself. He stopped so I could get a (cold) beer. Then he made me practice my Spanish all the way to El Remate. He also offered to drive me back to Belize when I was ready, but I stuck with the plane. I already had my return ticket and wasn't trusting my powers of communication to cancle it.
Musically, it was heavily influenced by the Punta Rock of Andy Palacio, a brilliant man from Belize who left us too soon. Check out his "Watina" album. It's not Punta Rock like his earlier stuff, but Garifuna Traditional.
This was also heavily influenced by the bass speakers in the pick up truck parked close to the hotel blasting music for their picnic while I swung in my hammock in the sweltering heat. I should learn from this to only write songs that I can actually play on guitar and sing.

By Bob Nordquist, From the upcoming Intangibles CD, "The Age of Wonder". This isn't about anyone in my family, even though it's an open letter to a daughter, sister and mother. (I don't even have a daughter). I know some people with chronic pain though and have experienced it myself. I hope this is a hopeful song and not depressing. Either way, here it is.

This was on my, "Waiting For the Dam to Break" CD. Jerry Oliver played a great lead guitar on it. I wrote the first half in 1988 and the second half 10 years later after sitting with the same two guys on a Northern Minnesota Lake.
The morning sky on Saturday Showed storm clouds, they were far away We couldn't seem to get in motion 'til someone had a crazy notion We went to town for batteries It took two stores to find six D's We filled the woods with rock and blues We took turns when it came to choose.
I know a man, a friend of mine He claims he's not, but he's very kind He sort of opened up to me I saw some things I shouldn't see He told be about his early strife He told me that he loves his wife He told me that she changed his life
Now I'm out in the woods with a couple of regular guys Drinking Mescal and watching Mars up in the sky
Friends remain, but some have gone They say it's short, but life is long And memories of distant days Seem empty miles of space away Time is caught in old guitars In photographs and classic cars Tonight it's shining down from Mars
I know I shouldn't reminisce In looking back there're things you miss The future's filled with memories Still waiting to be lived by me But days spend under leaking tarps Or drinking beer and catching carp With friends who share a piece of shore Are places I keep aiming for
So I'm back in the woods with a couple of regular guys Drinking Mescal and watching Mars up in the sky

I've posted this before from a live show, also released it on a CD and David Hanners covered it and posted it. Still I rewrote a verse of it. Seems a little late, but I think it's a better verse now. This is about the great fire of 1918 that hit North Central Minnesota. Actually I should thank David for the new verse. When he was about to do the song, he wanted to know all he could about it. I did some more research and found an old newspaper story that talked about the train ride through the fire from Cloquet to Duluth. It inspired me to write a little more descriptively about it.
