I crossed from Washington State into Vancouver, B.C. in 1984 and this was pretty much how it went.
As late as 2002, crossing from Washington State to Victoria by ferry was no big deal either. No TSA groping and humiliation. I just presented my passport on both ends of the trip and that was it.
