About this user

I grew up in the US, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There are +/- 12,000 people that claimed Ukrainian roots in the Mpls-St Paul area in the most recent census. I have two grandfathers and one grandmother from Halychyna and one Baba from Poltavshchyna. My parents were born in the course of WWII, lived the earliest part of their lives in refugee (DP) camps, and then came as children to the US. Thus I describe myself as an Ukrainian-American, which means to me that I am neither American like those Americans who did not grow up in a diaspora or ethnic community, but also means that I am not &quot;Ukrainian&quot; like those born and raised in Ukraine--it's a third identity entirely unto itself.

I have studied Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy, and Comparative Literature, all with an emphasis on Eastern European Studies and the history of Marxist thought and continental political philosophy.

I've lived in and traveled to Ukraine many times.

I also am musician and dancer. I have performed (off and on) with the Ethnic Dance Theater of Minneapolis since 1999. We in EDT perform in traditions from all over the world, but are deeply rooted in the folk cultures of Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Central Asia, and parts of the Middle East. I also am the organizer of a Mpls-based Ukrainian Village Band, in which we play Ukrainian, Rusyn and other central European folk music in both authentic and "Euro-Cafe" styles.

I am a father and spend most of my time between two continents and three countries: US, Ukraine, and Latvia.
