IMO the runner should be safe. Can't allow a fielder to intentionally kick or throw the ball into the basepath in order to get an interference call or take a shot at a runner. I don't think that's what happened here, but it is a similar situation to that theoretical situation.

That was a good call, the batter had no part of the pickoff attempt and the catcher has the right to run out in an effort to get a better angle/chance or make runner make a misatake. Batter should have been back away from the plate.

No matter what league there is a safety rule in all softball, slow and fast pitch that says you have to slide if there is a close play. The runner did not slide so he is out and had that not been the end of the game subject to possible ejection.
