The last time we heard from [dweeb] they were taking care not to smudge the ink on their freshly signed contracts with Fierce! Distribution. And then there was their album It Came Form Outer Space. And all those great summer gigs. And that thing with the BBC.
These days, [dweeb] are even more pumped about the future, with a whole set of plans getting cooked up for this summer. Theyll be taking their neon hyperglo and industrial sonic optimism out to all the major festivals, as well as plenty of the quirky, out of the way ones. Thats how [dweeb] roll with plenty of energy and their own unique sense of direction. And thats why all the cool kids love them.
Its always been this way with [dweeb]. Ever since they started in their native Coventry back in 2003 [dweeb] have built their own ark. Unorthodox is their middle name well, it would if they needed one. The truth is that [dweeb] says it all: theyre not quite like anything youve experienced before.
And this is exactly what drew the attention of those BBC producers. Back in 2007 [dweeb] were the subject of Singing With The Enemy, a documentary which saw them teamed up with a XXX-rated punk band for a week. True to form, [dweeb] presented themselves with honesty, integrity and supersized passion. True to form, [dweeb] left people smiling and asking questions.
[dweeb] are singer/guitarist Tim Alford, bassist Matt Donald, drummer Dave Ashworth and the guitarist known only as The Bman. Through their years of touring they have taken an ark and filled it with a hefty load of fans. From the home grown scene around Coventry to Londons finest indie venues, all across the UK and mainland Europe, [dweeb] have connected with thousands of fans, giving them all something to sweat about, something to smile about and something to go home and try and remember how they ever lived without.
[dweeb] have opened for big hitters like Delirious? and Enter Shikari and have headlined more than their fair share of upscale popular festivals overseas. Its those firebrand live shows that do it making [dweeb] a perfect choice for an headline slot at Ultimate Event, a date which is fast becoming one of the UKs most popular and talked about music festivals.
2010 started with something fresh. As their sound has grown it has morphed from its early punk-feist into something that blends the raw with the melodic. The result is not It Came from Outer Space Part TWO, but a potent jab and left hook of a record called Feels Like Dynamite.
Produced by the band as well as Mark Underdown and David Lynch (Duke Special), this latest album comes ready-mixed for maximum flavour. Feels Like Dynamite? It certainly does.
In fact, put them up on stage with the lights and crowd and no matter how bright the lights or how big the crowd [dweeb] will serve up one of the most dynamite live shows around. Trust us, theres nobody from the UK scene who can quite match them for energy, for antics or for left-field hooks.
Put it another way and you could say that [dweeb] are the archetypal post-punk band. Theyre driven by a passion that amps up everything they do on stage and off. And with all of them finally full time this year, the opportunities to take that energy and integrity out to as many people as possible is one theyre determined not to miss, as Tim explains:
We want 2010 to be a year where we know that we gave it all we had. So we want to tour hard, meet a lot of people on the way and share these songs with them. We want to use our songs, our shows and our album to help people to find a new reason to be hopeful in whatever circumstances theyre in, whatever stage of life. If stories come back to us of people finding new hope, then the year will have been a good one, the album will have been worth it.
