Playing a part in countering the lies and misinformation spread about "illicit" drugs such as Heroin (morphine). And no, I don't use "illicit" drugs nor am I promoting them. Very briefly, the two most dangerous drugs are tobacco and alcohol. If drug prohibition was about health and banning a substance was the best strategy (it's not) then tobacco and alcohol would be prohibited. The "War on Drugs" has nothing to do with the health risks of "illicit" drugs. None of the "illicit" drugs with the exception of smoking cannabis (the method of administration, not the drug itself) and inhalants are as dangerous as tobacco and alcohol. Drug prohibition is about creating jobs and wealth. Based on the lie that "illicit" drugs are an eminent threat to society, the general populace is brainwashed into thinking that prohibition is the best strategy. Restricting supply creates the perfect tax-free black economy, which ironically actually guarantees extensive distribution of "illicit" drugs. A mammoth amout of taxpayer's money is devoted to policing this constructed "war". Recipients of this money are government departments such as the DEA in the US, police, arms makers, prisons (both private and public) etc. The DEA's budget is $2 billion and it directly employs nearly 10,000 people. Governments also profit from the compulsory seizure of assets of "illicit" drug dealing. Drug prohibition also plays an important role for politicians: "illicit" drugs are falsely portrayed as a serious threat to the health and cohesiveness of society, giving politicians the justification to fight the "War on Drugs". Actually, here in Australia, "major" political parties accept donations from tobacco and alcohol companies. So while imprisoning and otherwise oppressing those whose drug of choice happens to be something other than tobacco, alcohol or caffeine, politicians wallow in the largess of the manufacturers and dealers of the truly dangerous drugs and facilitate their promotion (alcohol), thereby maximising the profits from them. All in all, a disgusting folly. (By "illicit" drug I mean a drug who's possession is illegal, a controlled drug.)
