Wayne Johnson plays Nocturne in B Major, Op. 32 No. 1, by Frederick Chopin. Video & audio recorded by Wes Johnson (cameramanwdj@gmail.com).
To pondwatcher: Thanks for the comment! Yes, that is my Steinway. It's a model "B" rosewood "Tiffany" art-case design, and is signed on the plate by Henry Z. Steinway. It's a very special instrument, and his spirit lives inside!

Goldberg Variations 8-14
Goldberg Variations 8-14(He conseguido la partitura casi original (la original original se perdio) despues de mucho tiempo, si alguien la quiere qu...
I'm quite sure this was taped during the time Gould was miffed at Steinway for being unable to produce an instrument to his liking, so he's using a Yamaha. His beloved Steinway was dropped and damaged so severely that it could never be put back together with the same voice and action he preferred...

Thanks! This piece sounds quite easy, but it is actually much harder than it appears. The melody is divided between the hands in the middle of the texture while the bass and harmonies are subtly woven below and above it. Trying to get a singing tone and shape the phrases using mostly the "inside"...

It is Christmas day, 2010. A friend just sent me the link to this remarkable film. I think it’s one of the best Christmas present I’ve ever received! It’s like opening a musical time capsule, and it brings to life again some of the greatest pianists this planet has ever known. Watching and liste...

Alicia de Larrocha - Grieg Notturno op. 54 n. 4
Alicia de Larrocha plays Edvard Grieg Notturno op. 54 n. 4 from Lyric Pieces.
Exquisite performance! It has an enchanting poetic tenderness with a driving sweep in the middle section that is rare in most performances. She has a way of turning even relatively simple pieces like this into unforgettable works of art.

This piece is indescribably exquisite! I teach a university level music literature course, and had never heard the piece until I recently discovered it on Youtube via a Facebook friend. We always mention Ole Bull in my classes, but never seem to have time to listen to anything of his. But that ...

Thanks, all! I love the idea that people of all epochs and cultures have serenaded each other through music and song. Schubert's melody is one of the loveliest ever written in my opinion, and Liszt admirably resists the temptation to clutter it up with too many notes.

Does anyone know if Richter ever taught piano or did master classes? At a later point in this documentary--when speaking candidly of his own teacher, Neuhaus--he said, "Teaching is something awful. It has a fatal effect on a pianist."

Michelangeli - Debussy - La Cathedrale engloutie
I believe Debussy would have loved this recording since it is quite similar to they way the composer himself played it. The notation is an enigma however, and if one takes it too literally, one misses the music...

ROSALYN TURECK J.S. BACH GOLDBERG VARIATIONS-ARIA
from a 2002 lecture on Bach's ornamentation for the Taubman Institute in Williamstown, Massachusets a few months before her death
Really nice clip of Turek. I loved it. It's amazing how anyone could play with such concentration and musicality with a video camera focused on each hand at such close range. One slight slip and the critics would have pounced on her like a tiger. But then some performers seem impervious to human...

Very entertaining video. But I want to know what the singer is saying after the words, "through rain and wind and weather." I used to watch "Rawhide" when I was a kid, and never could understand the words. Something about "heather" or "nether" or "leather" I think. I've wondered about this since...
