About this user
1. Appreciation of Indian classical music through family background and self tuition
2. Involvement with folk clubs as a student with some self- tuition of Hawaiian guitar and Indian Flute
3. I have a longstanding interest in holistic health and healing and particularly the role of the arts in this process. To this extent I have personal experience of folk and film music, the use of clay and art as therapeutic tools, the use of the voice through toning and chanting and the role of rhythm using simple percussion instruments. I have gained an understanding of a broad range of complementary therapies and different healing techniques. More recently I have attended workshops in sound, music, voice and healing. Some of these have been with internationally recognised teachers such as Jonathan Goldman, Jill Purce, Steven Halpern and Don. In 1994 I helped to run and organise a number of voice -- movement workshops. My personal enjoyment of music and latter experiences in the role of music as a healing art have led to my particular interest in and desire to learn Indian Classical Music. The Khiraanaa Gharaanaa is noted for its emotional expressiveness and the style of teaching is to bring out the maximum creative potential and imagination of each student in such a way that he/she will truly evolve personally, musically and spiritually.
4. The opportunity to start learning and practising Indian music came through helping my wife run the Asian Artists Network between 1994 and 1997. This involved learning about the raag system through practising Hindi film songs with other musicians. Western instruments are used a lot and my own input was on guitar or piano accordion. We held regular meetings with some more public performances.
5. From October 1996 I began learning Indian vocal Classical Music from Pt Arun Debnath, a guru (teacher from the Kiraanaa Gharana). My wife and I had been to India to find a teacher for our music group. Our teacher and his wife, both of whom are internationally recognised teachers and artists, come to the UK twice a year. During these 8-week periods my wife and I learn intensively with 2 lessons per day. Since 1994 my wife and I have been running a Holistic Healing Network - Health2ooo. We hold regular meetings and give talks at Health fairs & to other groups. The healing aspects of music often form part of these.
