CLEVELAND -- For the first time in more than one hundred years, people can actually have a residential address on Public Square.
The Park Building, one of the city's original "skyscrapers," is being turned into a condominium complex by owner and developer Matt Howells.
"Here we are a hundred years later, housing back on Public Square," said Howell as he pointed out spectacular views from the ninth floor roof of the building. "Maybe it's the start of a new great era for Cleveland and I think it is."
Howells bought the Park Building three years ago from the grandson of the man who built it in 1904. It sits on the corner of Euclid and Ontario and represents the first actual Public Square residential space in more than a century.
"It's the character of the building. The architecture, the history, the splendor of the building," Howells said. "It's a charming building. It's just beautifully laid out."
He tells WKYC one of the biggest challenges was connecting the building to the adjacent 11-story building just to the south. One of the great feature he says will be the three penthouses being built on top of the existing roof.
"Off to the left you can see Avon Point, off to the right the Rock and Roll Hall of fame," Howells points out. "Straight ahead the Soldiers and Sailors monument. It's going to be an amazing view for everyone to share."
One of the three penthouses, which has a potential buyer, will have 64 feet of windows looking north onto Public Square. Sixteen of the 26 units are sold, and ten buyers have already moved in.
