John Mullen ,singer/songwriter, started to write songs in the late 80s.Winning first and fifth prizes in a local competition provided the impetus for him to start playing his songs with a ballad-group called Liffey Junction.After the demise of the group, John was commissioned to write a song for a local Festival Fifty Years Of Cabra.A local choir ,co-ordinated by John,was involved in this enterprise. Around this time, 93-94, John started Home-Recording in the front room of his house! Over time he has developed a very professional recording-studio which has afforded opportunity for many a budding song-writer to record work in a congenial atmosphere. A song from this era, written in conjunction with Derek Reddy, in praise of Steven Collins ,World Middle-Weight boxer, was pipped at the post by a song from the well-known group the Chieftains. The local song ,entitled Lets go , Stevo was a very popular song in the area however. John began to play with a rock-band called Electric Circus next. This band became the vehicle through which an amount of Johns work was performed. Rainy Night In Dublin was an example of the prolific out-put generated by John and colleagues at this time.It was a very popular choice at the bands venue. At a later stage John went on to form a group called Celtic Fire. This was described by a local wit as poetry in motion.A notable song of this period was one written to mark The San Diego Suicide stage-managed by Marshall Applewhite. The songs title, Applewhite, reflects the subject-matter. As always, topics close to his heart are put to music by John with lyrics provided by a variety of friends etc. Celtic Fire metamorphosed into the group which had the quirky nameSkadiddle.The song Give me a reason written in collaboration with David Lydon at an IMRO Seminar in Maynooth in 2000 was the final song played by the group before it disbanded. At this time, to celebrate the Millenium, John persuaded a collection of singer/songwriters in a well-known pub in Dublins city-centre The Dame Tavern to release a compilation album called Nothing But the Dame Old Story!This album showcased some of the fine talent in the city and would never have existed without Johns persistence . After Skadiddle John ventured into performing on his own. He has co-written with a collage of people since his early days of writing , to name but a few : John Kavanagh; Andy O Brien; Peter Johnston; Martin Sneyd; David McCarthy; Anne Gray; Les Doherty; Brew Alexander; Robbie O Brien; Frances Kerin; Barry Prout; Leo Lawlor; Ciaran Bagnell; Eoin Meek and more recently Dave Connolly.Of course he has also composed and recorded several songs with Eliane,his daughter
